Design for Z-shaped Patterns

It has been shown that when Westerners view web pages, they tend to scan from the top left to the top right, and then focus down the page from the left to the right. This creates a sort of Z-shaped pattern of eye movement. However, this general behavior can change depending on what items are on the page.

For web pages containing news, readers tend to view the headlines first. The logo of the site or company who owns the site also draws a user's eye. The first few words that appear in headlines or other content are critical, because users tend to read quickly to determine whether they should read further, and they jump around a lot.

Position and choice of wording is critical when constructing a web page.
